Waking
The waking state is associated with physical objects, things that you can sense, you interact with these objects with your physical body also known as gross body. You can heighten your inner and outer gross awareness with different benefits.
Outer
Sharpening sensory awareness can occur by strengthening the sensory organ itself, so one can see further or hear more acutely, one can also learn to differentiate the sensory more finely, such as learning to differentiate notes (absolute pitch), or tastes etc. This also includes synthestheisa when senses interconnect, such as seeing sounds or hearing feelings.
Inner
Inner awareness in the gross physical state can be sharpening your awareness to be aware of things such as your breath, your heartbeat, your posure, muscle tension, temperature. The benefits of these are to learn the connection between your actions and how your body responds. For example if you eat something and feel sick 30 minutes later then you can adapt your behaviour. Or if you are afraid you feel your heart start racing. In whatever case biofeedback can help to change behaviour.

Dreaming
Dreaming is a part of the sleeping process when one lives within a changing, subtle dream world. This occurs 3-6 times in a 8 hour sleep and dreams become longer in the later hours of sleep with about 2 hours per night in dream.
During dreams there are actually no physical laws; they seem to exist because of ones belief in them, this is also why in dreams we tend to experience what we expect.
One important element of dreaming is dream recall. This is actually remembering the dream after it happens. Some people claim they dont dream, in reality they just dont remember. Recall can be increased by journalling or simply intent.

The Witness is what is aware right now. What is aware during waking, dreaming and deep sleep. It is the subject that percieves all objects. It is unchanging and ever present.
